Liberty Global reports sustainability success

Hi, I’m Crystal Crawford, Corporate Responsibility Specialist at Liberty Global. I am part of the global Corporate Responsibility (CR) team based in Amsterdam. Like Virgin Media, Liberty Global believes that everyone should be able to explore the amazing but often complex digital world in a safe and responsible manner. That's why promoting a digital society is at the heart of our CR strategy.
In mid-September, Liberty Global published its 2012 CR Report and announced its continued inclusion on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI), which tracks the performance of the leading companies in terms of their economic, environmental, governance and social performance.
Our 2012 CR report, entitled ‘Discovering New Possibilities’, focuses on the issues that are most important to our stakeholders, as well as those issues that have a material impact on the future competitiveness of the business.
These are grouped into four key issue areas:
- Promoting a digital society
- Building trust with customers
- Managing our environmental impacts
- Being a responsible business
Last year, we engaged in numerous projects to tackle the challenge of digital inclusion, including helping underprivileged families access the internet, providing seniors the skills they need to get online through programs like Internet Buttons, and helping children discover science and innovation opportunities through our online Tech School platform. We also sponsored Safer Internet Day for the seventh consecutive year and launched “Who are your kids talking to?” - an animation which helps parents understand the many challenges that their children are facing online. Our community investments in 2012 totaled $9.7 million (up from $7.7 million in 2011). Most of those funds were focused on promoting a digital society, education and young people.
